Running a Live Currency Exchange Rate Board Without Refreshing a Spreadsheet
How currency exchange bureaus keep a rate board accurate throughout the day without a staff member manually updating numbers every 15 minutes.
A currency exchange bureau lives or dies by whether the rate board matches what’s actually being quoted at the counter. A whiteboard or a printed insert that’s an hour stale isn’t just an inconvenience — it’s a customer walking out to check a competitor, or worse, a dispute at the till over a number that’s simply wrong.
Why manual rate boards fail
Someone has to check current rates, do the math for the bureau’s spread, and physically update a board or a digital slide — every time rates move meaningfully during the day. In practice, this happens a few times a day at best, which means the board is wrong more often than it’s right during active trading hours.
What a live rate board actually needs
Automatic refresh, not manual entry. A forex widget pulling real ECB rates and refreshing every 15 minutes removes the manual step entirely — nobody has to check a rate site and retype numbers.
Trend indicators. Simple ▲/▼ arrows per currency pair tell a customer at a glance whether a rate moved up or down since the last refresh, without needing to compare against yesterday’s printed sheet.
Your own spread, not the raw interbank rate. A configurable buy/sell spread per pair means the board shows what you’re actually quoting, not a raw rate customers can’t use to transact with you.
What else belongs on the same screen
A rate board alone is a strong start, but a bureau’s screen doesn’t need to stop there — a branded background with your logo, a promotional slide cycling in the same playlist, a live clock for customers checking market hours, and a financial news ticker pulling market headlines all run alongside the rate board without extra hardware. If something needs to close the bureau early (a system issue, a security concern), an emergency override pushes the notice to every screen within seconds.
What’s actually available for currency exchange signage
Atracast’s currency exchange module includes the live forex rate widget with configurable spreads, branded backgrounds, promo content in the same playlist, a live clock, a financial news ticker, a slide designer for custom rate-board layouts, and per-location Store Hours.
What to check before setting up a rate board
- Does the board refresh automatically, or does someone manually update rates?
- Does it show your actual quoted spread, or the raw interbank rate customers can’t use?
- Is there a trend indicator so customers can tell direction at a glance?
- Can you push an emergency closure notice to every screen instantly?
