The Simplest Digital Signage Widget That Still Gets Ignored: Store Hours

Why 'we're open' is the single most-searched piece of information about any business, and how a live Open/Closed indicator changes whether customers trust it.

Before anything else — a menu, a promotion, a sale — the single most common thing a customer wants to know about a business is whether it’s open right now. It’s also the piece of information businesses get wrong most often: a sign on the door that hasn’t been updated for a holiday, a website hours page that’s a season out of date, a handwritten note taped over the printed hours for “today only.”

Why static hours fail quietly

A printed hours sign is right most of the time and wrong at exactly the moments it matters most — holidays, weather closures, one-off schedule changes. Nobody updates a printed sign for a single Tuesday closure, so customers show up to a locked door, and the business loses the visit entirely rather than the customer just coming back later.

What an actual hours widget should do

Show today, not the whole week, by default. A customer glancing at a screen wants today’s hours in one second — a “Today Card” display answers that instantly, without making them scan a seven-day table.

Include a live Open/Closed indicator. The single highest-value addition to any hours display: a dot or badge that says, right now, whether the business is open — calculated automatically from the current time against the configured schedule, timezone-aware, correct without anyone touching it.

Offer a full week view where it’s useful. For businesses where customers plan visits in advance — gyms, clinics, service businesses — a full-week display with today highlighted answers the “what about Saturday” question without a phone call.

Where this widget shows up

Store Hours isn’t tied to one industry — it’s the one widget nearly every business type uses, often paired with something else on the same screen: a menu board, a rate board, a video background, or just branding. Set the schedule once and every screen using that location’s hours widget stays correct automatically, including through holiday closures if configured.

What’s actually available

Atracast’s Store Hours module offers Today Card and Full Week display styles, a live Open/Closed indicator, timezone-aware calculation, and pairs with background music, video backgrounds, a live clock, and a scrolling ticker on the same screen — plus an emergency override for unexpected closures.
